Driving Safely on Skye’s Single Track Roads
Many roads on Skye are single-track lanes, accommodating only one vehicle at a time. These roads feature designated passing areas or passing places, and there are a few rules on how to use them safely.
- When encountering an approaching vehicle, motorists should either maneuver into a passing place on the left side or wait opposite one on the right.
- If the driver behind wishes to overtake, they should use a passing place on the left or wait across from one on the right.
- It is courteous to give way to vehicles ascending uphill whenever feasible.
- From time to time, drivers should be prepared to reverse until reaching a passing place to facilitate the passage of the other vehicle, if they are closer to a passing place. Sometimes, a considerable distance may need to be reversed.
- However, it is advisable to refrain from driving onto verges to avoid reversing, as this may result in vehicle damage or becoming stuck in roadside ditches.
- Acknowledging the consideration of fellow road users with a friendly wave as a gesture of 'thank you' is customary when they have accommodated your passage by reversing or waiting.
